Harvesting Potatoes With The Tots

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12 (KJV)

I am ecstatic! The leaves are turning brown on the potatoes like it said it would on YouTube. It's 30 days short of 120 so I'm a bit nervous about the turn out but excited to see what it would look like. After reading Hope in the Soil I started planting and incorporating the kids like the mentioned. To be honest the raised beds and the buckets of potatoes were started to develop their characters. They have diligently taken up their two junior sized watering cans and headed off to the garden (Legend was a little bit more diligent than Saige but she did ok) .

I was amazed at their interest and diligence to the 3x6x1' raised beds and the two buckets of potatoes held together by Home Depot buckets and hand crafted at camp meeting. And if I must be honest I too grew close to the plant lifeforms growing outside the view of our kitchen windows. The is something about growing your food (or in our case the snack garden). The connection seen divine and the time spent with the kids along with the Christ object lessons pulled from it was awesome (the bug and pest part can go though. yeah yeah yeah I know it's part of nature but seriously yuck. Maybe some day I'll appreciate it but not today).

Time To Reap (Video Kept Long for Nostalgia sake)

The scavenger hunt was thrilling (next time I'll buy gloves for all of us. I still found bugs and worms though we had the potatoes grow above the ground smh). All in all we harvested 31 baby potatoes (nothing like we seen on youtube) I think the spacing was too small. We will revisit this next year Lord's willing. For those who haven't grown anything Get Started! Even if it is herbs on a porch or window sill you would appreciate eating something you grown and feel more connected to the earth God created. and you can start with something easy. All we did is add soil to the bucket every week or so and watered it. Just grow something I highly recommend it.

The potatoes last us roughly 3 meals ; It was like that for the other food grown in the raised bed as well. See why we call it the snack garden. I would definitely have to revisit a gardening size If we are going to even entertain growing food as a method of reducing our food cost
